2022 FHPS Board of Education Elections

While voters and Forest Hills Public Schools residents may already be familiar with the service of other school board members, Support FHPS is pleased to endorse three candidates for Forest Hills Public Schools’ Board of Education who you may not already know:

  • Dr. CJ Michaud (PharmD) – Six-year term

  • Malorie Ninemeier (CPA) – Six-year term

  • Dr. Ed Aboufadel (PhD) – Two-year term

Public schools are a vital part of every community and in Forest Hills, our schools are a point of shared pride. The district’s high schools rank within the top 5% nationally (U.S. News & World Report) and motivates families from around the country to enroll their students in the Forest Hills Public Schools (FHPS) K-12 “experience.”

The seven-seat Forest Hills Board of Education works with the superintendent to ensure district policies, procedures, and programs are continually assessed against the shared vision for the district.

In November 2022, four of those seats are up for election, including:

  • Three seats to be elected to a six-year term (general election)

  • One seat to be elected to a two-year term (special election to complete a partial vacated term)

There are no primary elections. All candidates will be listed on the ballot.

What to Know about the 2022 Elections and Support FHPS

Electing qualified, pro-public education candidates into these board seats is essential to the future of the district. Over the past year, school boards across the country have come into stronger focus due to:

  1. The desire to force partisan agendas into our public schools that have always been non-partisan

  2. An effort to shift support and funding away from public schools into privatized or “for-profit” education, voucher or “opportunity scholarship” programs, and charters

Support FHPS launched in 2021 as a 100% local volunteer committee to protect the integrity of the district from unwarranted disruption. We are a collaboration of current FHPS families, room volunteers, PTO members and Foundation donors who believe in the strength and potential of our schools.

We confront disinformation planted nationally by pro-privatization think tanks and hyper-partisan politicians and continue to advocate for the Support, Safety and Success of all students.

Our executive committee of four spends countless hours talking with parent groups in districts around the country, reviewing education policies and reading articles. We’ve been invited to join the national Network for Public Education, the Michigan Education Justice Coalition, and the Students’ Rights Coalition. But our support of public education does not mean we’re complacent. We’re focused on locally relevant issues and raise our own policy recommendations with FHPS.

Candidate Survey
(
read the responses

Inspired by our deep work with education organizations, we created a survey to gather input from the large pool of candidates vying for these open seats and help inform the voting public.

We know the strongest Board of Education candidates tend to hold these qualities:

  • They enter with a desire to serve the public and support public education opposed to coming in with a timely “axe to grind.” This is a six-year term that outlasts many short-lived issues

  • They prioritize objective thinking and analysis for decision-making, allowing for healthy conflict and civil discourse to guide outcomes

All candidates were supplied the survey with a corresponding deadline. There are many themes that arose in candidate responses, along with several ideas for the future.
